About I Just Spit Out Bacon

Your blogger on the right, and
food photographer /  supportive
boyfriend on the left
My name is Devon, I am a 20 something vegetarian living in Los Angeles.  I decided to put this blog together because I am bored, needed a hobby to call my own, like to cook, and recently stopped eating meat.  I live with my boyfriend and his best friend.  I typically cook 3-4 times a week for the house, I grocery shop and cook, and they clean...it works out pretty well.  I take meal suggestions, but for the most part the guys are at my mercy.

A little while back (summer of 2010) my boyfriend was looking for a new book to download onto his e-reader and stumbled onto Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer.  Thinking it was similar to his other books, he downloaded it.  We didn't talk much about the book until a few weeks later when we went out to dinner at a local BBQ restaurant.  Convenient.

Since I like to cook, like a challenge, and like the idea of becoming a complete California stereotype,  I threw out the idea of trying a vegetarian lifestyle for a month.  It was the beginning of July, so I suggested trying it out for August.  August is the busiest time for me at work, so I figured it would be a uber challenge.  Starting in the middle of July, I stopped buying meat.  August came and went and it was so easy and we were feeling so good, we decided to keep going.

We made it through the holidays without eating any meat, but I could feel my dedication to vegetarian living weakening.  I didn't and don't miss the taste of meat, but I do miss the spectacle of it, especially around the holidays.  The giant turkey or roast is always at the center of the table, everyone oohs and ahhs, and then my dad complains because he accidentally overcooked it.    Waiting at the airport in Boston for our flight back to LA,  I heeded Jordan's suggestions and started reading Eating Animals.  I had finished the book before we touched down in LA with a renewed resolve to stay vegetarian.  To sum up the book, factory farming is terrible, that's as far as I need to go.  If you want to know more, I highly recommend the book, its a quick read.  I promise not to be a preachy vegetarian.

So I Just Spit Out Bacon is going to be about vegetarian living in Los Angeles.  I've got a bunch of recipes that I've tried over the past year, many of which I've put my own twist to or tweaked here and there.  Luckily for you all, I don't agree with the whole "you can either cook or bake" I like to do both,  so you can look forward to some desserts as well.

I've got some friends who cook and a few who cook and blog.  Keep an eye out as I am going to attempt to recruit a few of them to guest blog!
